Site HAUD (Haukadalur) is now online. No more "manual ftp" for this site. It transmits the data to the seismic computer at Haukadalur (appr. 500 meters) using Straightcore radios. From Haukadalur the GPS data stream joins the seismic data with Freewaves to Búrfell (about 14 km).
2 Straightcore access points have been installed at Búrfell for the Hekla network.

FTEY in a mess

Site Flatey (FTEY) was in a bad state this week when it was visited. Water had gotten into the box and flooded the receiver :( Now a NetRS is running there instead of the Septentrio.

Site SAUR is now transmitting (15sec) data to Reykjavik, joining the sites NYLA and KRIV. We have almost decided what wifi gear to use... If the gear at SAUR keeps up the good work we will be using that.

Site visit and download

Hi all.
Just adding to the New Years news. My brother Kari went to the HLFJ site this weekend and downloaded all the data from it. In short everything is working perfectly and there are no data gaps. I will post some new pictures of the site and some timeseries (once analyzed) on the HLFJ website:

New Year's news

It has been some time since the last blog, so I will try to give a short update on what has been happening in the 1-Hz CGPS project.
Although I did not attend the AGU meeting I heard that it went allright, and that a general interest was in the project. My 1-Hz Iceland poster presented at AGU can be downloaded from here. I will be attending the EGU meeting in Vienna with a similar presentation. A few of the 1-Hz Iceland group will be attending that meeting.
Sigurjon went to visit the stations in north Iceland during the Christmass time. He wisited 6 stations and all of them were running and collecting data. However, it turned out that Septentrio's sbf format is considerably more space consuming than the Trimble format, causing the receivers to fill up much quicker than we anticipated. This puts some pressure on getting the stations on-line.
The budget has been an issue within IMO, and it looks like it is quite tight. But we are not overspending - yet!
Both UofA and PSU sent in applications to NSF related to this project. UofA seeks to improve the geodetic research in central Iceland and PSU seeks to do geodetic research in the eastern volcanic zone. Both applications involve semi-permanent GPS sites.
A new site (Kalfholt - KALT) in the south Iceland seismic zone, started collecting data just before noon today, January 18, 2007. Very approximate coordinates are 63.89735 -20.65608. In total there are about 47 CGPS sites collecting data in Iceland today!

HOTJ on Tjörnes

I apologize for dominating the blog during the last few weeks by introducing new stations, but I'm almost done! Here comes the 9th station, HOTJ or Hóll on Tjörnes peninsula. This station is located between the older Árholt (ARHO) and the new Kvíslarhóll (KVIS) stations, between the farms of Hóll and Ísólfsstaðir (66.16167N, 17.24427W). This station gets power from the nearby farm of Hóll via 400m long cable that laid into the ground (not by hand!). This station has been collecting data since 22 September, 2006.

Hekla sites installed!

During November 6-9 we got 5 sites around Hekla up and running. The monuments were already installed last spring and in this trip we installed the wind generators and the receivers (all NetRS). The sites need to be visited once more to install the communications. The sites installed were MJSK, GLER, NORS, HEKR and HESA (see map). We also installed a monument at BRDK, but that site is (at the moment) planned as a semi-continuous site. A monument was installed at HAUK last week by Þorgils and Judicael. Pete will post the details for each site in the next few sites as he was the photo master of the trip (along with doing the drilling and carrying all the heavy stuff!).

GMEY on Grímsey Island

I here continue the introduction of the North Iceland CGPS stations and the next in line is GMEY on Grímsey Island (66.53890N, 18.01872W). After spending several hours digging and trying to find bedrock near the IMO seismometer on Grímsey, we gave up and installed the quadrupod on a cliff above the harbour in Grímsey Village. From the quadrupod we laid a 30m antenna cable to a nearby house to where the receiver is kept. HEDI on Tjörnes Peninsula

The 7th station to be introduced of the North Iceland GPS network is HEDI on Tjörnes Peninsula (66.08071N, 17.30945°W). This station is located above Héðinshöfði Farm, only about 3 km north of Húsavík and the Húsavík-Flatey fault. The receiver gets power from a seismometer that is also at this location (see the black plastic barrel in the picture). GPS data has been collected at HEDI since 19 September 2006.

KVIS on Tjörnes Peninsula

KVIS is the sixth GPS station in North Iceland, and it is located near the Kvíslarhóll farm on Tjörnes Peninsula, north of Húsavík (66.10074N, 17.27167W). The quadrupod was installed above an already established benchmark, NE 9505, which has been used by Thierry Villemin & Co. during several campaign GPS surveys. The receiver gets power from the farm (in the background) along a 400 m long cable. This station has been collecting data since 26 September 2006.

FTEY in Flatey

FTEY is our fifth new station in North Iceland, and it is located on Flatey Island, just north of the Husavik-Flatey fault (66.16031N, 17.84793W). On the picture one can see Thorgils, Sævar (who took us there on his boat and helped us with the setup), Sjonni and Janik, behind the antenna. Here we used a PBO-style setup, with four steel rods that were cemented into shallow drillholes and welded together at the top. There is no good bedrock on Flatey, but under about 1 m of soil, there are some consolidated sediments that appeared stable, at least it wasn't too easy to drill into them. The receiver gets power from a nearby IMO windpower generator that was set up a few years ago for a seismometer nearby. We also hope to use the already established seismic-data radiolink from Flatey to Husavik mountain for the GPS data. This station has been collecting data since 25 September 2006.

GRAN near Granastaðir

The fourth new station to be introduced in North Iceland is GRAN, which is located near Granastaðir Farm in Kalda-Kinn (65.91864N, 17.57862W). The receiver gets power from a nearby IMO seismometer. I´m sorry that I only have a picture of the foundation without the antenna, but it is there now, and the GRAN receiver has been collecting data since 19 September 2006.

SIFJ in Siglufjordur

The third new station to be introduced in the North Iceland network is SIFJ, which is located just east of the the town of Siglufjordur (66.13792N 18.89896W). The power comes from a house that is ~250 m away and the instrument itself is in the box on the quadrupod. We're planning a wire-less datalink to one of the houses on the other side of the fjord. When I fired up my laptop at the site, I could detect at least four different wireless networks! This site has been collecting data since 23 September.

KOSK in Kópasker

KOSK is the one of the new stations in the North Iceland sub-network and is located in the village of Kópasker. The coordinates of this station are 66.30325N, 16.44343W
and it has been collecting data since 18 September, 2006.

I just got news that Peter LaFemina now has his hands on the 5 NetRS receivers for the Hekla network. The plan is to install them in October.

North Iceland CGPS installation completed and the first station GAKE described

We have finished the setup of 10 new CGPS sites in North Iceland, nine instruments are already collecting data, while one instrument will be kept in Reykjavik for a few weeks for further tests. All the sites are logging at 15 secs and are doing so remotely. The data link will be installed in the coming months. The fieldwork was carried out by Sigurjon Jonsson, Janik Deutscher, Thorgils Ingvarsson, Halldor Geirsson, and Jeudicael Decriem.

In the following posts during the next days I will introduce the sites with a picture. The first one is Garður in Kelduhverfi (GAKE; 66.07808N, 16.76467W), see picture above, which has been collecting data since September 18, 2006.

North Iceland CGPS installation almost completed!

The installation of 10 new CGPS stations in North Iceland is almost completed. Nine stations are already up and running and the work on the 10th installation is well under way. We plan to finish the fieldwork tomorrow and keep one instrument in Reykjavik for the first few weeks to test data downlink methods for the sites, but all instruments are currently storing data locally and at 15 secs.

Ph.D. candidate selected in the North Iceland project

A Ph.D. candidate has been selected for the North Iceland project from a number of applications. His name is Janik Deutscher, from Austria, and he has a background in Physical Geography. Janik has already started working on the project by participating in the North Iceland CGPS installation.

First new station in Northern Iceland collecting data

Today at noon the first of the 10 new stations in Norht Iceland started collecting data. The station is at the very outskirts of Iceland, in Grímsey and bears the name GMEY. The receiver at GMEY is from Septentrio in Belgium and it is currently collecting 15s data to its internal memory.
For over a week now installations have been ongoing in North Iceland. We have installed 7 out of 10 monuments and hope to have intruments running at all of these by the end of next week.

HVEL and BUDH

Hveravellir (HVEL) is now running on power from the meteorlogical station (thanks to Sighvatur).
Still need to make a centerpoint and measure antenna height but data are rolling into the receiver.

STKA - Stora Kjalalda

Site selection in North Iceland

Last week (15/8 - 18/8) Halldor Geirsson and Sigurjon Jonsson travelled around north Iceland to select sites. In short: we found 14 possible sites for the 10 instruments to install in September. However good this may sound, we had some difficulties and many of the installations will not be optimal; most sites require long cabling and/or short-range wi-fi solutions. We will publish a map soon with the new planned site locations.

A test (!) and new sites installed

While being a test for this blog site, I'd like to give an update on what has been happening with the 1Hz Grant of excellence project lately.
All quadripods have been installed in the Hekla network. At selected sites instruments are running on solar panels, collecting 15s data to the internal memory.
Sigrun Hreinsdóttir has been drilling a lot in the Hveravellir region with IMO's new technichian, Þorgils Ingvarsson. They have finished one installation at Hveravellir, HVEL - a quadripod installation. Tomorrow (15. Aug) they are going to finish a PBO installation at Lambafell.

Þorgils installed an instrument at Nýlenda at the western edge of the Reykjanes Peninsula 2 weeks ago.

4 weeks ago we finished installing a seismic and CGPS station at Goðaland, Mýrdalsjökull as a part of the European VOLUME project. The gps station (GOLA) is collecting 15 and 1s data but we have not finished the installation where the radiosignal from the instruments is recepted.

Sigurjón Jónsson and Halldór Geirsson are going tomorrow to North Iceland to select sites for 10 CGPS stations.
